The button back technique—a traditional way of backing a diamond in a case of gold for added depth and refraction—was built for stones like these. Cut before electric light, the antique pear holds its colour in the body of the stone rather than throwing it off the surface, and casing it in solid 18 karat yellow gold with no white metal anywhere warms it further. The drops detach, so the hoops can be worn on their own.
